Daha Ata Sanniya is a traditional Sri Lankan healing ritual performed to cure illnesses believed to be caused by evil spirits. The term means “Eighteen Demons,” referring to eighteen supernatural beings thought to bring different diseases and misfortunes. This ritual combines dance, drumming, chanting, and elaborate masks representing each demon. It is mainly practiced in southern Sri Lanka, especially in rural communities. The ceremony is both a spiritual and cultural performance, led by skilled exorcist dancers. Beyond healing, Daha Ata Sanniya preserves Sri Lanka’s rich folklore, mask-making traditions, and indigenous beliefs passed down through generations.
